During the short drive to Norie’s Place, Jules held Parker’s hand on the bench seat. It was nice – ten minutes to just be together and enjoy that small gesture of intimacy without having to wonder what it meant for the two of them, or for her own sexual orientation.

Bisexual… pansexual… straight with one exception… Parker had never questioned her identity before because she’d always just been with David, and she’d assumed it was forever. Now, Jules was bringing out a whole new side of her and she wasn’t sure whether the labels felt like her own or not.

She just knew, in that moment, it felt good to be sitting beside Jules, to have their fingers entwined, to feel the breeze from the open window on her cheeks and the potential of the evening stretching out in front of her.

When it seemed like the silence was getting too heavy, Parker said, “So, my parents keep bugging me about coming out here to see the rescue.”

It just popped into her head – the first thing that came to mind because she’d just been on the phone with her mother a few hours ago, nervously chattering about the date. But the moment it came out of her mouth now, she looked at Jules and bit her tongue.

“Sorry,” she said. Inside, it was more like, Way to go. The first thing you do on your date is complain about having parents who want to see you?

Jules just shook her head. “Don’t do that.”

“What?”

“Tiptoe around me,” she said, squeezing Parker’s hand. “My parents are dead. It sucks – a lot – but a month ago, I wasn’t even willing to say it out loud. I’m not over it and I’m not sure I ever will be, but I’m working on it. Just like you’re working on getting over your ex.”

Parker instinctively checked for the sensation of that pesky little lump in her throat – the one that never failed to make an appearance when it came to David. But there was nothing. Was there anything left to get over?

“We’re a pair,” she said, and Jules laughed.

“We are,” she answered. “This is either going to end in total disaster or happily ever after.”

“Well, I try to be an optimist,” Parker told her as Jules pulled up to a parking spot on the curb outside a cute little café with a handcrafted sign that read Norie’s Place.

“We’re here,” Jules said. “And hey – you should absolutely invite your parents to come out and visit you. The farmhouse is yours – I don’t want you to feel like you’re just a visitor there.”

“Thank you,” Parker said. “I appreciate it.”

They went inside and Jules introduced Parker to the owner, Hannah, who did pretty much everything from waiting tables to cooking the food and taking payment, depending on where her staff needed her.

“Avery here?” Jules asked, but Hannah shook her head.

“She’s got a big contract with a real estate developer and her crew’s been framing houses on the other side of town all week.
